TU Braunschweig: Adaptronics for Machine Tools
Fundamental research activities to increase the performance of machine tools are in the centre of the new programme. An efficient machine tool is characterized by high production quality and processing velocity, reliability as well as flexibility when using different tools and materials. At present it is true that parts of it (structures, drives, measuring systems, etc.) are improved continuously, however a jump in performance can be achieved only by applying innovative basic approaches.
Such approaches are represented by adaptronic systems up to now mainly developed for aviation and orbital applications. The development started in the eighties with so-called intelligent or smart structures which could be integrated into a bigger mechanical structure by means of proper elements of piezo-ceramics or piezo-foils being capable of acting as sensors and actuators simultaneously.
The priority programme comprises topics as active damping and reduction of structural vibrations, compensation of static deformations, autonomous adaptation of adaptronic components in production processes and adaptronic tools and tool-heads.
