RWTH Aachen - The most western university in Germany

The Rheinisch-Westfälische Technische Hochschule Aachen, shortened to RWTH Aachen, was founded in 1870. Currently, about 30,000 students are registered here in more than 85 degree programs. From its beginnings to the present, the academic institution features engineering as its focal point. Currently, about 40 % of students take courses in technical subjects, about 25 % study natural sciences, mathematics and computer science, likewise about 25 % are registered in humanities, social sciences and economics and about 10 % are matriculated in medicine or dentistry.

In the past few years, a range of new degree programs were introduced at the RWTH Aachen, like business engineering, biotechnology, material and computer science, computational engineering science and computer mathematics. These distinguish themselves above all through their interdisciplinary approach. That means, content from different academic areas (like economics and technology) are combined in a course of studies and allow a comprehensive approach to academic questions.
A further result of interdisciplinary work between departments are, among other things, the 13 special research fields in which, as in other research projects, students can take part. This is a qualification building block for the yearly 2,000 graduates and 700 PhDs.
