TU9 - Excellence in Engineering and the Sciences made in Germany

TU9 is the association of the nine leading Institutes of Technology in Germany. The members of TU9 are:

  • Rheinisch-Westfälische Technische Hochschule Aachen
  • Technische Universität Berlin
  • Technische Universität Carolo-Wilhelmina zu Braunschweig
  • Technische Universität Darmstadt
  • Technische Universität Dresden
  • Leibniz Universität Hannover
  • Universität Karlsruhe (TH)
  • Technische Universität München
  • Universität Stuttgart

Excellence in research
A distinguishing feature of TU9 universities is excellence in research. They were successful in both rounds of the German government’s Excellence Initiative. Altogether seven graduate schools and eleven clusters of excellence were established at TU9 universities. RWTH Aachen, TU München and Universität Karlsruhe (TH) were even awarded the status of “excellence universities”.

The research excellence of TU9 members is also reflected in their outstanding positions in a variety of rankings. Thus they are to be found at the top of the DFG-ranking for research funding in engineering.

According to the Federal Statistical Office, the TU9 universities attracted more than 26 per cent of all third-party funding acquired by the 383 German universities and institutions of higher education in 2006. In the ranking of the universities with the highest revenues from third-party funding, seven TU9 members are in the top ten (not including medical facilities). Here you can find detailed information on this topic [German only].

The TU9 members play a major role in training young scientists. In Germany currently 57 per cent of all doctorates in engineering are carried out at TU9 universities.

Outstanding in teaching
The TU9 universities also enjoy an outstanding reputation for teaching. Their leading position in engineering and their strength in natural science ensure that students receive an excellent scientific training and graduates benefit from excellent career prospects. Nationwide 47 per cent of all engineers with university degrees come from TU9 universities and some 10 per cent of all students are registered at TU9 universities.

Internationally attractive

The TU9 universities are highly attractive to international students. The average proportion of international students at TU9 universities is 18 per cent, which is significantly above the 13 per cent for German universities on the whole.

International scientists are also drawn to the TU9 universities. The ranking of the Humboldt-Foundation, which counts the stays of international fellows and award winners at German universities, places seven TU9 members among the top ten for engineering sciences
