Life in Karlsruhe

Central, but also in nature: the surroundings of the university are as diverse as the teaching and research offerings. The almost 60 hectare large campus lies on the Kaiserstraße, the main street of the Fächerstadt - Partitioned City, and at the same time boarders the Hardtwald Forest, which is inviting for a leisurely stroll. The proximity to Alsace and the mild climate of the Rhine River gives the Baden metropolis an almost Mediterranean flair in the summer. Known worldwide is the partition-like ground plan, which the city has thanks to the Markgrafen Karl Wilhelm von Baden-Durlach. He founded the city in 1715 and had alleys lain to radiate from the centrally placed castle in the direction south.

The Fächerstadt - Partitioned City Karlsruhe lies in Southwestern Germany on the western edge of Baden-Württemberg and has about 270,000 residents. Located on the Rhine River, the city area boarders Rheinland-Pfalz in the northwest and France on the west. Students must count on living costs of 500 to 600 euros per month. The biggest difference depends on the cost of rent. One lives very inexpensively in a student residence hall, which on average costs from 125 to 230 euros per month. However, it is sometimes difficult to receive a spot; because of this, interested persons should apply early. Many students live in shared apartment communities – they rent a larger apartment together and split the costs. The price for a room in an apartment community depends on the size and quality of the apartment and lies between 150 to 300 euros. The Studentenwerk, which arranges dorm rooms, also arranges private rooms.
