50 years ago the IIT Madras was founded with significant assistance of the Federal Republic of Germany.
A high-level delegation of Germany's leading technical universities (TU9) accompanied the Federal Minister for Education and Research, Dr. Annette Schavan, on her trip to India, where she met her Indian counterpart, Minister for Science and Technology, Mr Kapil Sibal, on occasion of the celebration of the 50-year anniversary of the IIT Madras in the southern Indian city of Chennai.
TU9 and IITS enjoy very good relations
In his speech Professor Dr. Kurt Kutzler, President of Technical University Berlin and TU9 representative, congratulated the Director of IIT Madras, Professor MS Ananth, also on behalf of his colleagues, the TU9 presidents and rectors. Professor Dr. Kutzler praised in his address the IIT Madras as an impressive center for research, technology development and training: "The IIT Madras is superb, its departments and alumni have received numerous awards and enjoy a high reputation internationally. It is our great pleasure and honor at the same time, that all TU9 universities enjoy good relations with the IIT Madras and the other IITs. This contains the successful exchange of scientists and students in the fields of engineering and the sciences.” As part of a public panel discussion TU9 rectors and presidents presented together with their Indian counterparts projects on sustainability of their universities.
STAR grant from the Federal Minister for Education and Research
On the occasion of the 50-year anniversary of the IIT Madras, the German Federal Minister for Education and Research gave a scholarship as a gift, from which doctoral students and their tutors from Germany and India will benefit. The objective of the STAR fellowship program (German-Indian STAR - Scholarships for Technology and Research) is to strengthen cooperation between the IIT Madras and the German technical universities, particularly the TU9.
