TU9 recruitment campaign for young engineers is awarded the first prize for the whole of Germany in the competition "Land of Ideas", category education

The leading Institutes of Technology in Germany – TU9 – are actively campaigning against the shortage of engineers. As a "selected location 2012" in the competition "365 Places in the Land of Ideas", they have now been awarded first prize for the whole of Germany in the category education. ++ Jürgen Fitschen, Co-Chairman of the Board and of the Group Executive Committee Deutsche Bank AG: "The winners of the first prizes for the whole of Germany and the general public prize 2012 are Germany’s beacons of innovative strength and sustainability." ++ Prof. Dr. Hans Jürgen Prömel, TU9 Vice-President and President of TU Darmstadt: "The TU9 universities are bridges to the world at large, which young STEM scientists cross to come to Germany."

The TU9 recruitment campaign for young engineers is not only a "selected location 2012" in the competition "365 Places in the Land of Ideas", but also winner of the first prize for the whole of Germany in the category education. The prize winners stand as beacons of the innovative strength of Germany. TU9 was now ceremonially awarded the first prize for the whole of Germany by Jürgen Fitschen, Co-Chairman of the Board and of the Group Executive Committee Deutsche Bank AG, and Holger Lösch, Chairman of the Supervisory Board of the initiative "Germany – Land of Ideas". The prize was awarded during a ceremony held in the headquarters of the Deutsche Bank in Frankfurt am Main.

The competition "365 Places in the Land of Ideas" has been staged jointly since 2006 by the initiative "Germany – Land of Ideas" and the Deutsche Bank. Every year 365 outstanding projects and ideas that make a lasting contribution to the sustainability of Germany are selected. From these "selected locations 2012" an expert jury chooses an overall prize winner in each of the six categories business, culture, science, environment, education, and society.

The TU9 recruitment campaign for young engineers

The leading Institutes of Technology in Germany – TU9 –are actively campaigning against the shortage of engineers. Their aim is to recruit international students to degree courses in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). To achieve this goal, TU9 is represented at international student fairs around the world. In addition, they promote STEM subject studies in Germany at German schools abroad. Gifted international students can complete a trial study week in Germany. The concept is successful: in the meantime the initiative has been able to show a significant increase in international students taking up studies in STEM subjects.

Prof. Dr. Hans Jürgen Prömel, TU9 Vice-President and President of TU Darmstadt commented on the award: "We are delighted to have won first prize for the whole of Germany in the competition '365 Places in the Land of Ideas'. The TU9 universities are bridges to the world at large, which the young STEM scientists, much sought after by industry, cross to come to Germany. We are playing a decisive role in assuring Germany’s future, despite the negative demographic development. This award is a major recognition of our TU9 initiative for young STEM scientists, and motivates us to build on our success."

"Innovations are the driving forces behind prosperity, growth and progress. The winners of the first prizes for the whole of Germany and the general public prize 2012 are Germany’s beacons of innovative strength and sustainability. They encourage others to take the initiative and tread new ground," said Jürgen Fitschen in his laudation.

"For six years, the 'selected locations' have been social indicators and have supplied reliable solutions to the pressing challenges of our time – and this is especially so for the overall prize winners 2012. Today they are being honoured for this outstanding commitment, and rightly so," said Holger Lösch, Chairman of the Supervisory Board of the initiative "Germany – Land of Ideas".

About TU9
TU9 is the association of the leading Institutes of Technology in Germany: RWTH Aachen, TU Berlin, TU Braunschweig, TU Darmstadt, TU Dresden, Leibniz Universität Hannover, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, TU München, Universität Stuttgart.

More than 240,000 students, or ten percent of all German students, are registered at TU9 universities.

In Germany roughly 50 percent of all engineers with university degrees come from TU9 universities; some 57 percent of the doctorates in engineering are awarded at TU9 universities.

"Excellence in Engineering and the Sciences Made in Germany": the TU9 universities use this motto to attract the best students worldwide - from Beijing to Buenos Aires. With this, the TU9 members attract considerable attention on the international education market, and provide a bridge for young international engineers to Germany.
