TU9 was created in 2003 as an informal discussion group of university presidents. On 26 January 2006 the nine member universities joined together to found an association.
TU9 President is Prof. Dr.-Ing. Wolfram Ressel, Rector of University of Stuttgart.
TU9 Vice President is Prof. Dr. Volker Epping, President of Leibniz Universität Hannover.

In June 2006 TU9 opened an office in Berlin.
The role of the TU9 office is to
- facilitate cooperation between the member universities
- coordinate press and public relations
- maintain contacts to decision makers from politics, industry and society and
- further develop the international marketing of TU9
